Not everything that is well-intentioned works
When working with refugees, it is not only what is well-intentioned that counts - but above all what works. NGOs in particular sometimes tend to develop programmes from their own perspective without keeping an eye on the actual realities of people's lives.
One example of how things can be done differently is our new yoga programme at the Federal Asylum Centre (BAZ) in Basel.
From the city centre to the outskirts - but not offside
The BAZ Basel is located on the edge of the city, in the countryside, near the Lange Erlen. What is a beautiful setting for walkers means isolation for many refugees: Isolation. The accommodation is difficult to reach, and integration programmes such as those offered by SPORTEGRATION are often too far away.
Instead of continuing to plan "in the city", we have reacted - and moved our programme to where it is needed. Since 14 April 2025, our yoga course has been held in the immediate vicinity of the BAZ.
A course that really resonates
This was made possible thanks to our collaboration with the ecumenical pastoral care service, which provides us with a room. We are also supported by the staff of the BAZ Basel and our volunteer yoga teachers.
This has resulted in a yoga course for 12 residents - regular, easily accessible and open to the SPORTEGRATION community.
What we take away from this
- Integration only works through dialogue.
- Proximity is not just a question of geography, but of attitude.
- Local people often know best what is needed.
- Focusing on impact means remaining flexible, listening and adapting.
Thanks to the BAZ Basel for the cooperation - and for the trust in breaking new ground together.
